Would you make this switch?

In my most recent upholstery project, I refinished the seats from a ‘74 Porsche 914.

Not his car, just a random image from Google.

The stock seats are black vinyl with a ‘basket weave’ pattern; basically just like a beetle’s seats. The client asked me to switch to orange plaid instead. At first I thought it was really cool, but now that I’ve stared at them for hours, I’m not sure how I feel. Would you make the switch?

Not digging it. The proportions of the bolsters are just a little not-quite-right for the cushions to be something else with such a contrast. Makes the middle of the seat seam bulgey and the bolsters just... odd. Might help if the head rests were partly in the plaid and the bolsters were wider, but I don’t really know what the fix is, here.

I’m of the opinion that the world needs more plaid seats. They get my vote, though I kinda like that basket weave material.

Actually, those side bolsters are larger than OEM. He had me add 1" of foam to them, for comfort’s sake. Also, theplaid was very soft, which makes it look ‘fluffier’ than vinyl.

I was mostly going with the side bolsters being too narrow, which the increased height only exaggerates. They’re a very awkward looking set of seats to start with, but you don’t notice it normally because they’re all kind of drab, fading into the background... and they’re close enough to flat across that the weird proportions aren’t *standing out* in contrast to one another, more kind of quietly grumbling.

Yeah, these seats were weird in a lot of ways. For instance, they have a fair amount of structural material made from hardboard (compressed sawdust, just like they make pegboard out of.) 40 years in a convertible had turned it into dust.

I’m anticipating the bolsters becoming wider once they’ve been sat on a few times. The foam wraps all the way around, but because of stetching the vinyl into shape, they’re currently standing a little taller than they should be.

Your input is good. Could some plaid fabric look good? Yes. Could this plaid fabric look good? Yes. Does it all come together right in the seats shown? No.

I agree that it seems like the proportion of plaid to black bolster and the headrest doesn’t all quite come together right.

I don’t deny that in the car their... oddness will be a lot less noticeable and the bolsters widening will help, but I’m still at a loss for what exactly would make them “right” instead of close enough.

I like it, but I’m a sucker for plaid seats. The first manufacturer to offer a new fullsize truck with two plaid bench seats, gets my money.

fits the time period. 50/50 if I’d go there. Not crazy for the color but would like the grip of cloth seats, and additional side bolstering.

My dad’s 914/6 has got houndstooth seats which suit it well...
